The biggest feature of Tengchong Beihai Wetland Reserve is the floating grassland. It is densely packed with aquatic plants, where old grass is rotten, new grass grows on the decaying grass roots, and the rotting process repeats, day after day, year after year, and finally a patch of grassland is formed and floating on the water. In appearance, it looks like rice fields, but the so-called rice fields are floating on the entire surface of the lake, thus obtaining its name “Floating Grassland” or “Sea of Grassland”. Such floating grassland is like an inland of grass, with its thickness of more than 2 meters. Generally, it often takes up to 600,000 years for such grassland to take shape. Tengchong Beihai wetland is a volcanic lake as well as a typical alpine lake, the water tastes slightly acidic. The diversity of ecosystem here is so unique for floating grassland; if a cut piece of floating grassland were transplantedto a water area with the same PH value as the acid lake, it still fails to survive. A semi-peat “floating carpet” type swamp meadow formed in this wetland ecosystem is a very special type found in plateau lakes, its thickness is high, the water below the grass are deeper. Such floating carpet type grassland can promote material circulation and energy flow in the wetland ecosystem and maintain ecological balance; meanwhile, its role in purifying water quality and providing habitats for animals and plants is irreplaceable.
