As early as 1639, Xu Xiake, a famous traveler in Ming Dynasty, after visiting Tengchong, wrote in his diary that “the green wetland covers thousands of acres, and the floating grassland looks like a floating carpet with rivers and streams running through”. When a wetland is mentioned, one may usually associate it with a marsh wetland, but the wetland is a combination of grass, mud and water where people can tread on, thus obtaining its name as “floating grassland” or “sea of grassland”. The wetland is composed of constantly interwove grass roots and root hairs of various plants which have been growing continuously for about 600,000 years. The average thickness of such floating grassland is about 1-2 meters with the thickest part reaching two meters. It can move with the wind and has strong carrying capacity, and a cut piece of it can be used as a boat. To conclude, the floating grassland in Tengchong has typical characteristics of volcanic barrier lake swamp wetlands and plateau lake bogginess, making it rare around the world.
