There is a very touching legend about the Beihai Wetland and the Qinghai Lake. Once upon a time, there was a little white dragon, who was the patron saint of Beihai, a green dragon, who a daughter of the Dragon King. Since their childhood, they lived and played together, holding deep attachment towards each other. After the white dragon returned to Beihai where he was born, the green dragon missed him so much that she became thinner, finally she ran out of her home on her own and looked for her love. They got together again and spent a happy and carefree time. Unfortunately, good times did not last long. Their relationship was discovered by the Dragon King, who immediately forced the green dragon back to the Dragon Palace. Upon their arrival, the Dragon King arbitrarily planed to marry his daughter to the black dragon. Failing to defy her father, the green dragon asked him to spare her a day, and the latter agreed. On the first day of the wedding, the green dragon came to Beihai, the white dragon’s home, but she hardly dared approach, since she was afraid that she would never return once meeting her love. She only saw him from a distance, with sad tears trickling down her cheek. When her tears fell on the ground, suddenly lightning and thunder appear, following by wind and rain, loud noises, and the earth collapsed, the flood spewed out, and the whole mountain instantly turned into a lake. The green dragon rose high into the air and then jumped into the water, and lived here from then on, and the place was called Qinghai Lake (“Qing” mean “Green” in Chinese). Nowadays, when in rainy day, the locals often jokingly say that it is just a time for both dragon lovers to meet in private. The Qinghai Lake is a typical alpine lake, the water is slightly acidic, while the water of Beihai Lake is weakly alkaline. When it rains, the Beihai Lake often turns slightly acidic due to the influence from the Qinghai Lake. Legend has it that upon arriving the lake, young men and women can have a taste of sweet love when they hold a handful of water for each other.
